Consumer Tips: Maintaining Your Piano

For a piano to receive proper care, it is essential to receive the guidance of your piano dealer or a qualified piano technician who can provide the necessary periodic technical services and provide answers to developing service issues. The most visible feature of your piano is its finish which can easily be damaged unknowingly in a very short period of time by harmful exposure to sunlight, use of harmful sprays, polishes and cleaners. Be sure to inquire of your piano dealer what is the appropriate cleaner and polish for your piano's finish.

It is best to place the piano away from sources of extreme temperature changes such as floor heat/cooling vents, electric baseboard or other wall mounted heaters, radiators and climate control systems. The flow of air from these devices can cause extreme changes in temperature and humidity which effects the capability of your piano to stay in tune. Placing a piano against an exterior wall that is well insulated is not the problem that it was with homes built 40 or more years ago under lesser building codes.

Over time, placement of your piano near a window that allows direct sunlight to fall on it, will affect the tuning and performance of your instrument. You should be alert to direct sunlight that can damage the finish and other piano components. Our Northwest climate is near ideal for your piano, except when the thermometer is adjusted in the fall and winter to provide heat in your home. These seasonal changes are the main cause for you needing to tune your piano.

During social events, it is important to be alert for cups, plates, eating utensils and even floral vases containing water that may be inadvertently placed on the piano. Accidental spills may ruin strings, action parts, soundboards and finish work of your valuable instrument.

Your piano should be well maintained regardless of the age or skill of the piano player. A piano that is out of tune, has unpleasant tonal qualities, or an unresponsive touch can discourage even a novice musician. One of the best ways to reinforce interest in playing the piano and guard your investment is to maintain its overall performance in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. With proper care, your piano will be a lasting source of enjoyment, entertainment and satisfaction. It is a unique investment that can provide you and your family a lifetime of happiness and pleasure.
